Drivers Needed

September 16th, 2009

car_clipart_oldDear Troop 5,

We are in desperate need of drivers for the September camp out to Beartown VT. If your son is going on the camp out please consider driving. As of now we DO NOT have enough seats for all the scouts that want to go. Some one WILL be staying home that weekend.

If you son is not going, and you still want to volunteer to drive, please let me know. We will of course pay for fuel.

Thanks….

Sincerely,
Mr. Burns

Please respond to michelle@troop5middlebury.org if you are willing to drive

Service Opportunity

September 5th, 2009

Hi all,

Mr. Dicorpo from the church paid us a visit at last nights meeting and asked the troop for help with the church’s fall cleanup. They will be working on odds and ends and can use our help Saturday 9/5 from 9:00am- 3:00pm, and next Saturday 9/12. You do not have to be there the whole time – if everyone did an hour or two of work it would make a big difference to the church. Bring a rake, broom(put your name on these), work gloves, and a smile. They do not ask much of us throughout the year and this is a great oppurtunity to give back and say thanks. Tomorrow at noon lunch will be provided by the new pastor and his wife. We need adult volunteers as well as scouts – please let me know if you can make it either week and the time you plan to be there. Thanks for your help.
yours in scouting,

Dave Redline
Scoutmaster

Show and Sell

September 3rd, 2009

UBmicro-front-lgHello Troop 5:
Show N’ Sell season is upon us and we have some dates established in September and October:

Candy
Mrs. Peterson has some candy to sell and will be coordinating a Show N’ Sell at the Watertown Stop N’ Shop in the morning on Saturday, September 26.

Popcorn
A really simple way for your Scout to achieve his popcorn sales target is to participate in a Show and Sell event. Each Scout will receive 1/2 credit for what is sold during his shift and his partner receives the other 1/2. Popcorn Show N’ Sells will be held this year on Saturday, September 26th and Saturday, October 31. Assistant Scoutmaster Pat Dooling will be running sales locations at the Middlebury Post Office and the Watertown Stop and Shop. The following slots are available:

September 26
1 – two Scouts and two parents at post office from 9-12
2 – four Scouts and four parents at Stop and Shop from 12-3

October 31
1 – two Scouts and two parents at post office from 9-12
2 – four Scouts and four parents at Stop and Shop from 9-12
2 – four Scouts and four parents at Stop and Shop from 12-3

Thanks,
Patrick Dooling

If you are interested in signing up for any of these slots, please e-mail me at michelle@troop5middlebury.org

Daniel Gardner, former Troop Committee Chair, passes away

August 24th, 2009

It is with a heavy heart that I pass on the news that one of our former committee chairs has died.

Dan Gardner served on the troop committee and as committee chair in the 1990′s.  He also served as a merit badge counselor and Cubmaster of Pack 6.  Mr. Gardner’s sons Stephen and Andrew are among Troop 5′s Eagle Scouts.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, August 25th at 10 am at the Middlebury Congregational Church.

The text of the obituary follows:

Daniel T. Gardner
Retired police officer

SOUTHBURY — Daniel Thomas Gardner, age 62, a longtime Middlebury resident, husband of Linda (Thyren) Gardner, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, at Waterbury Hospital surrounded by his family.

Mr. Gardner was born in Waterbury on March 5, 1947, son of the late Harold and Dorothy (Nelson) Gardner. He resided in Southbury for the past nine years. He retired from the Town of Middlebury, serving as a police officer for 18 years. During this time, he was the town’s first youth officer and he also served as detective. Daniel founded the YAC (Youth Action Committee), which then led to the founding of the Middlebury-Southbury Youth Council. Prior to his service as an officer, he volunteered for the Middlebury Fire Department and was employed by the Town of Middlebury.

Mr. Gardner was an active member of the Middlebury Congregational Church. He was a member of the choir, deaconate, search committee and assisted with Pilgrim Fellowship. Daniel enjoyed helping others, and he always wanted to be a part of something bigger than himself. He was a 12-year survivor of renal cell carcinoma and 4 -year survivor of a stem cell transplant study conducted by the National Institutes of Health. The most important thing to him was his family and spending time with them.

Smith and her husband, Joshua, of Southington; two brothers, David J. Gardner and his wife, Maryann, of Wolcott andRobert P. February 10th, 2009

Hello Troop 5:

Thank you Chris Dibble for doing our Troop’s Friends of Scouting presentation at the Court of Honor. Thank you to the families that have donated. If you wish to return your pledge card, you can give them to me this Thursday night before or after the Troop meeting. I will also have blank cards for those of you unable to attend the Court of Honor.

Each year, besides registration fees, it costs an additional $150 per Scout to make this wonderful program operate. The money goes to support summer camp, professional staff, adult training, and camperships. Scouts from our own Troop have benefitted from Campership support. When times are tough, camperships are vitally important to keep boys in Scouting.

While many of us have less to give, we cannot ignore what is happening to people in the towns in which we live and work. This is the time to be courageous about giving! Now more than ever is the time for those of us who can still give to do our best.

ALL contributions, big or small, are appreciated.

Yours in Scouting,

Maureen Marcucci, Chairman
