video iconHey Scouts!

I just found a GREAT site on the scouting.org website.  It has videos for each of the requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class.  You can watch the videos to learn the material before doing the requirement.  A great help towards your advancement

Check out Early Rank Requirement Videos.  You won’t be sorry!

Scouting for Food

Monday, October 26th, 2009

GoodTurn

“Scouting for Food” is Scouting’s community stewardship project aimed at addressing the problem of hunger in the community in which we live and work.

Scouting for Food is a food collection effort carried out by Boy Scouts, Venturers, and Cub Scouts from our community. Scouts distribute food drive donation requests (flyers, notes, and/or bags) throughout a designated area and then return to collect plastic grocery bags filled with donated food. The bags are collected and carried to local food pantries, churches, shelters for the homeless, and other local agencies that feed the needy.

Scouting for Food is a project rooted in the very foundation of the Scouting movement. Through initiative and hard work, the Boy Scouts have developed a framework that can help local food pantries feed tens of thousands of needy local residents with emergency aid. It is up to the people of your community to make Scouting for Food a success.

Troop 5 will be participating in Scouting for Food in November.  Scouts will be distributing bags throughout Middlebury on Saturday, November 7th.  Scouts will return to pick up bags on Saturday, November 14th. All food items collected will be donated to the Middlebury Food Bank located at the Shepardson Community Building.

Any non-perishable food items (especially proteins) will be accepted.

Thank you for your contributions to this important community service project.

Pilgrim’s Road Race

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

RUNNERSHi Everyone!

It’s time for the Middlebury Congregational Church’s Annual Pilgrim Road Race. They ask Troop 5 every year to help out with the parking for the event. The road race is scheduled for Sat., November 7th. We would need to be there for about 7 or 7:30 (I will need to confirm the time) and stay until about 11 AM. I need at least 2-3 other adults (besides myself) and several scouts. Please contact me at michelle@troop5middlebury.org if you would be able to help out. We really do need to show our support for our Chartering Organization! It will also count for service hours for scouts 2nd class and under. Hope to hear from you soon! Have a great weekend!

Thank you,
Karen Curry

Wilderness Survival at Mattatuck

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

campinglogoWell, the Vermont trip didn’t quite go as planned, since we did not have enough drivers to get our whole group to Vermont. But, by the look of the smiling faces on our returning campers, I think the Mattatuck trip was just as successful.
Our fearless campers braved the elements on a wilderness survival expedition out at lost lake at camp Mattatuck. The scouts gained some knowledge about edible plants, as Mr Cocchiola gave a presentation about the local fare. Scouts were able to try some delicacies like roasted acorns, banana fern root, and Justin Z’s favorite sassafras tea!
One of the adults has now since gained some knowledge about tent design, as his night’s experience with a leaky tent has prompted some subsequent research. Hopefully we can use this knowledge to purchase much needed equipment for out troop to keep future campers cozy and dry!
Justin Z gave a little talk on what to pack for emergency supplies when packing for a hike. Great job Justin!
Troop 5 joined Pack 15 and troop 444 for campfire on Saturday as they were also camping at Mattatuck for the weekend. The scouts had a great time playing flag football and sharing songs and skits.
Special thanks to our adults leaders for giving their time to the troop. Weekends like this would not be possible without you!

Bottle Drive Update

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

bottle1We had a very successful bottle drive yesterday filling 2 trucks, and brought in approx. $650-$700 after expenses. The scouts and parents worked extremely hard as they never really stopped from 9:00 to 1:20.
As usual Tom DeAngelis did a fabulous job coordinating the event. Great Job Everyone! Thanks to everyone in the community who helped us out by donating bottles and cans, we really appreciate your contributions! See you again in December!
