Following a great week at Summer camp a few items were
left behind when we checked out on Saturday evening.

Now residing in the Riddle’s garage are:

bungee
2. A small grey fishing tackle box
3. A Dick’s Sporting Goods chair
4. A pair of brown hiking boots
5. An adult size medium class B shirt
6. A garbage bag of dirty laundry (Nice to know at
least one scout was changing his clothes during the
week)

Please contact Andy Riddle to claim ownership. He will
bring them to the troop meeting on Aug 30th unless you
want to pick them up sooner.

From Maureen Marcucci, Committee Chairman

Reminder: Sunday, August 26th at 9:30 A.M. there will
be a service at the Middlebury Congregational Church
for Rev. Dennis Calhoun. Rev. Calhoun is transferring
to Marblehead after 18 years at the MCC. The service
will be followed by a social hour at Shepardson.
Troop 5 will be there to recognize Rev. Calhoun’s 18

Preventing Homesickness at Summer Camp

Friday, July 20th, 2007

As we prepare to head off to Summer Camp at Camp Mattatuck, I wanted to share an article I have with all of you.  This article has a lot of information on how you, as parents, can do your part to help prevent homesickness in your son while he is at camp.

Jeff Lukens
Assistant Scoutmaster, Troop 5

*THE HOMESICK SCOUT
by Fr. Francis Schwartz. From the Canyon Camp Leaders Guide, courtesy of the Blackhawk Area Council, BSA; Rockford IL.

Homesickness is described psychologically as a “manifestation of separation anxiety” or the “unconscious defense mechanism called regression.” The Camp Director and Scoutmaster describe it as the longing for home.” Many a young camper would put it more clearly as “that terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach.” Regardless of how homesickness is defined, it is, indeed experienced in varying degrees by Scouts who come to camp.

Summer Camp Deposits Due

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

A friendly reminder to all the new Scouts, and any Scout who has not turned in a deposit for Summer Camp:

A $50 deposit is due this Thursday, April 12th, to secure your spot with Troop 5 at Camp Mattatuck, August 12-18th.

The balance of your payment will be due April 26th.  A letter informing you of your balance will be mailed this weekend.

No scout from Troop 5 should stay home from camp for financial reasons, there are many sources of campership money available to us.  If you did not submit a request for a campership, please speak to me.  All discussions will be held in confidence.

Yours in Scouting,

Jeff Lukens, Assistant Scoutmaster

Summer Camp Balance due May 11th

Friday, April 28th, 2006

Please note the earlier due date than originally published.

This week, Scouts who signed up for a week at Camp Mattatuck will be recieving a letter detailing their balance due for camp.  Your advance deposit will allow you to avoid the late fee, provided that you pay the balance no later than May 11th.  You can give your balance to Jeff or mail it to him by May 7th (email him for the address – jeff@troop5middlebury.org).

Please make checks payable to Troop 5 – we will combine them into one check for the Scout Office.

Our goal is to have all of our troop members attend summer camp with the troop.  It is a week filled with fun activities and presents opportunities for growth and advancement.  Talk to any of the boys who have gone in past years – they will tell you how much fun it is.

If you have not signed up for camp, it is not too late.  Call Jeff to discuss your attendance.
