Hi all
The Mad River District ‘Mad Dash Across Mattatuck’ is
this weekend at Camp Mattatuck and the district could
use our help in running a fire challenge (burn the
string till it breaks) station. The competition runs
7am-6pm and if anyone is available to be there all or
portions of the day it would be appreciated. You
would never be alone in running the area and would
have the ‘tough’ job of securing the string and timing
teams as they attempt to burn it as well as grading
them on teamwork and safety. It’ll be a fun day
watching our scouts and others from the district
demonstrate skills that they have been taught and
practice.

1 – Copngratulations to Dom Romano for winning the
Lord Baden Powell award for excellence in volunteering
at the Troop level. Congratulations to Middlebury
Parks and Recreation for winning the Good Turn Award
for helping out Scouting in Middlebury. Both were
nominated by Troop 5.

2 – Sue Mayer is filing a list of Troop 5 Scouts and
adults with the Danbury EMS store. If you wish your
name to be added or you do NOT wish your Scout’s name
to be sent in, please let Sue know by Friday, April
18th by e-mailing her. Sue has a
complete Troop roster. ***Having your name on this
list will entitle you to a 15% discount on store
purchases – only at the Danbury store.

3 – There is a Cub Scout Day Camp staff opportunity for any
Scout interested who has First Class or higher rank.
If you are 13 years old, you can be a Den Chief, all
hours are volunteer, and can be used as service hours.
If you are older (14 and up) you can be a Den Chief or
worker. 14 years old, you can receive rebate for camp,
15 years old, you can get paid. Worker can be
lifeguard, sports area, wherever they need help, Den
Chief takes boys to each station. Let Mr. Redline know if you
are interested – he will give you the contact information for
the Camp Director.

3 – We need another adult (or more) to volunteer for
the May Camporee held on May 16-18th. Thank you to
Mr. Riddle for leading this campout. Please contact
Robin Redline at outdoor@troop5middlebury.org if you can help.

4 – We still need someone to volunteer to store the
Troop’s Klondike Derby sleds. Three are still at the
home of a family no longer part of Troop 5. ***Please
consider helping out by storing our sleds so the boys
can have easy access to them and work to prepare them
for next year’s derby. Please contact Dave Redline at
scoutmaster@troop5middlebury.org if you can help.

5 – Our slate of officers is almost complete, but
could anyone volunteer to lead the silent auction
effort (for October pasta supper)? If you can help,
please contact Adam Burns for further information.

6 – If anyone wants to lead the Earth Day effort,
please contact me (see minutes for details).

EAGLE PROJECT UPDATE/DIRECTIONS:

From Steven Z.

I just wanted to clarify the directions to my project
site. From the center of Middlebury on Rt. 64. Follow
Route 64 toward Quassy, about a mile down the road you
come to Fenn Pond. Bear RIGHT on Charcoal Ave (instead
of continuing left on Rt. 64). Continue strait to four
way stop sign. Turn RIGHT on Artillery Road and
continue about a mile and look for big boulder and the
pile of mulch (you can’t miss it). My car will also be
visible on the road. I also need materials for my
project. I need gravel rakes, shovel and WHEELBARROWS!
Please let me know if you have them and are unable to
transport them, we can arrange to pick them up. You
can also expect that they will be returned to you in
good condition. Thank You again!!!!

January 31st. If your son needs a Board of Review
(for advancement in rank), he must call Mr. Curry
prior to February 7th to schedule.

Hi all

Next Saturday is the Anual Mad River District Klondike
Derby at Camp Mattatuck. Permission slips will be
coming out early in the week – it is a one day trek
around the camp participating in various activities to
eran gold nuggets. Look for details with the
permission slip.

I) CONGRATULATIONS TO TROOP 5′S 47TH EAGLE SCOUT!!!
National has approved Eddie R.’s application. Please
mark June 10th on your calendars for his Eagle Scout
ceremony at Middlebury Congregational Church.

II) Congratulations to Jeff Lukens for winning the
Mad River District Award of Merit!!! This is the
highest award given to a District Scouter.

III) Congratulations to Tom Curry for winning the
Lord Baden Powell Mad River District Award!!! This
award is given to dedicated committee members and
scoutmasters who assist at the local level.

4) Thank you to the fourteen Troop 5 families who
pledged a combined total of $2,605 for the Friends of
Scouting Campaign!!! If you have not sent in your
pledge, please consider returning it ASAP to help in
this worthy effort. FOS helps Scouts with financial
needs attend summer camp, as well as funding
inner-city Scouting programs and support of camping
facilities, etc.

5) ****Parents and Scoutmasters, please consider
attending the May campout. So far, we have two
adults, BUT MANY more are needed to make this a
successful campout. Please e-mail if interested in
helping. April could use another parent as well, but
May is more crucial.

6) The May campout has been changed to one night:
May 19-May 20th at Mattatuck.

7) SERVICE HOUR OPPORTUNITY: On April 22nd from 3-5
PM, Troop 5 Scouts will assist in an Earth Day
Clean-up on the Middlebury Greenway, sponsored by the
Middlebury Community Women’s Club. Tefta Bushka and
Marti Peterson of Troop 5 will be in charge of this
effort. Scouts, if you can help out and want to earn
service hours, please contact Tefta Bushka. All Scouts should wear
class B uniforms (a Scout t-shirt).

Please mark May 5th at 3 PM on your calendars.
Troop 5 has been asked to help our sponsoring
organization Middlebury Congregational Church in its
clean-up from the flea market fundraiser at Shepardson
Center. Details to follow.

FROM WAYNE KREVETSKI, TROOP 5 ASSISTANT SCOUTMASTER:

I just wanted to drop you and the Committee a short
note concerning the recent Bromley Ski Trip. This
year I had the pleasure to spend Saturday and Sunday
skiing with the Troop. As always the boys were well
behaved and we all had a lot of fun, but I noticed
something this year that I wanted to share with you
folks. It was something that might be missed when
working with the boys on a day to day basis when there
is so much going on and so many things that need
one’s attention. I noticed a quiet team spirit,
“Scout Spirit”, with the group. When the adults had
to leave for a moment to “get the cars” for instance,
and a particular scout was left in charge, he showed
the initiative to get the others to carry the troop
gear to the curb so it was ready to load, and the
others joined in and lent a hand without question. On
a number of occasions I saw scouts assisting each
other, working together, or “Taking an easier trail”
because one member of the group was not ready for the
more difficult route. This was not done grudgingly
because they were told to by a leader but willingly
without a second thought. It was clear to me that the
boys had a genuine respect for each other. You can be
rightfully proud of your sons and the gentlemen that
they are becoming. I can tell you that I was proud to
be in their company and look forward to continued
association with Troop 5. I would like to close by
saying Thank you to Pat Dooling and Tom and Karen
Curry for giving their time and efforts so that the
trip could take place. I believe that the Troop is
lucky to have Leaders willing to make the commitment
so that a full program can be provided. I am looking
forward to the Venture Patrol’s visit.

FROM PETE PLOCH, CHESHIRE TROOP 51 SCOUTMASTER:

***Four spots available for the World Jamboree***

My son is going to the World Jamboree this coming July
in London . This past weekend, we went to a meeting
for his Jamboree troop up in Sturbridge. The Jamboree
Scoutmaster said that there are still four slots
available in the troop. The Scoutmaster said that he
would be willing to come to talk to any boy and his
parents to get the necessary paperwork going. As you
probably know, the cost for this is pretty steep,
about $4,000. But for anyone who can swing it, it
certainly sounds like it’s going to be a great thing.

If people want to get in touch with the Jamboree
Scoutmaster or have some general questions, they can
contact me and I’ll pass along the information.
