About Troop 5 Welcome to the
Troop 5 website. Here you will find basic information about
Troop 5, its history, accomplishments, and future goals. Our
troop motto is "Scouting at its Best!"
Where we are
Troop 5 is located in Middlebury, Connecticut, but members come
from the surrounding communities of Southbury, Naugatuck, and
Waterbury as well. We are chartered to the
Middlebury
Congregational Church, located on the Green in the center of
town. Troop 5 is part of the Mad River District of the
Connecticut Rivers
Council.
When we meet
Troop 5 meets every Thursday from 7:00-8:30 pm at the Middlebury
Congregational Church. The Troop Committee typically meets the first
Thursday of each month at the same time as the regular troop
meeting. Typically, the youth leaders (Patrol Leader's
Council, or PLC) meets the first Sunday of each month.
History of Troop 5
Troop 5 was chartered in 1979 with the
Middlebury Congregational Church as its sponsor and has had an
illustrious record of achievements. While we have grown in size
from a very small Troop to a relatively large troop, we have always
been a quality troop emphasizing advancement and personal growth.
In the relatively short life of the Troop we are proud to have
guided fifty young men in achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.
We pride ourselves in being an “active” Scouting unit participating
in many events, local, district, council and national in nature.
In 1992, Troop 5 was awarded the Blue Trail District Award of
Excellence. In 2003, Troop 5 received the Commissioners Cup for
being best Troop in the district for that year.
Troop Leadership
We are a Boy-Run troop. The boys are
organized into patrols of 8-10 Scouts, electing their Patrol
Leaders. Each year the boys elect a Senior Patrol Leader who
serves as the leader of the troop, running troop meetings, campouts,
and chairing the Patrol Leader's Council.
Supporting and backing up the boy-leaders is a
dedicated group of adult volunteers. The Scoutmaster and his
Assistant Scoutmasters have all completed adult leader training,
with some completing Wood Badge training. Every adult in Troop
5 must complete Youth Protection training in order to have any
contact with the boys. This includes parents who wish to
attend any campouts or hikes. All parents are encouraged to
become involved in the Scouting program, either by becoming part of
the Troop Committee, Assistant Scoutmasters, Merit Badge Counselors,
or by just attending a campout or other activity.
